There are several different types of asthma medications available to treat the condition. They are broken down into four categories that include anti-inflammatory medications, bronchodilators and others. The type of asthma medications prescribed will depend on which type of asthma the patient is suffering from. The patient may also be required to use more then one type of asthma medications.One common type of asthma medications that are used are in the steroid group. These may be prescribed in the form of an inhaler that the patient will use when they have an asthma attack or feel that they are becoming short of breath. Inhalers help relax and open the airways allowing the patient to breathe easier.Other types of asthma medications used to treat the condition may be in an oral pill form that is taken on a daily basis.

Oral asthma medications are normally taken along with at least one other asthma medication. Combining a pill for the condition along with an inhaler can be of great benefit to the patient and may allow them to suffer from fewer asthma attacks.asthma medications such as Terbutaline are commonly used to treat patients suffering from wheezing or shortness of breath. This type of asthma medication is in the group of the bronchodilators which works by opening up the bronchial tubes. Another of the asthma medications used is Fluticasone which is normally used in combination with other asthma medications. It works by bringing relief to clogged nasal passages and/or wheezing.One of the most common asthma medications prescribed is called Albuterol.

It too, is a bronchodilator. It helps open the airway and helps prevent spasms in the bronchial tubes. This medication can be prescribed in many forms including an inhaler, a liquid or in pill form. People suffering from asthma should always tell their physician if they have other health problems. Some asthma medications may cause side effects that will make those conditions worsen.
